Originally the nine muses were the deities of the springs. They became the goddesses of memory, and finally of poetic inspiration. They were the daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, a goddess of memory. Under the direction of Apollo, they sang and danced at festivities honoring gods and heroes.
The founding members chose the nine muses of Greek mythology to name the families of Delta Phi Delta. Each founding member took the muse that best suited her personality.
